ILOILO City – Eleven detainees from Iloilo City District Jail in Barangay Ungka, Jaro district tied the knot with their partners inside the jail facility.
“A mass wedding was initiated for our detainees and their a partners who completed all the requirements needed for their wedding,” said Jail Superintendent Vicente Papelera, head of the Iloilo City District Jail-Ungka.
Papelera said through the Aug. 3 mass wedding, the husbands or wives of detainees would not find it hard to visit them even on Sundays.
“Previously, the detainees’ partners could not easily visit them because they were not yet married. We wanted to make their unions legal, this was why we have this mass wedding. We’re very thankful to the city government, especially Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog, for sponsoring this mass wedding,” added Papelera.
The detainees also planted tree seedlings in Barangay Calajunan, Mandurriao district as part of the requirements for the mass wedding.
Forty five-year-old Cathy (not her real name) expressed her gratitude to Mabilog for initiating the mass wedding.
“My partner and I have been together for 14 years and we are very thankful to Mayor Mabilog for initiating this matrimony. Our children can now use their father’s last name,” said Cathy, a resident of Barangay Rizal Palapala, City Proper.
Cathy’s husband was arrested a year ago for violation of Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2004.
She vowed to remain faithful to her husband even if the latter is detained.
“Even before I married him, I am already faithful. I can assure him that I will still remain faithful and I will wait for him to be released,” she said.
Meanwhile, couple Anna and Nonoy both believed that incarceration is not a hindrance to tie the knot.
“When you love someone, you are willing to do everything and sacrifice for that person. For my part, I love him (Nonoy) and I am willing to wait for him outside,” said 35-year-old Anna, a resident of Barangay Bakhaw, Mandurriao district.
Anna and Nonoy were in a relationship for more than a year already.
Nonoy promised to change for the better for Anna.
“I’m really useless but I am willing to change just for her,” said Nonoy who was arrested for allegedly selling illegal drugs. (Iloilo City PIO/PN)
