ILOILO City – Two persons died in separate drowning incidents on Saturday and Sunday in Iloilo province.
Yesterday around 6 a.m., 74-year-old Raul Napulan of Barangay Saring, Miag-ao town was fished out of the river in Barangay La Consolacion.
Napulan was last seen alive on Saturday night in Barangay Consolacion attending the village fiesta.
Police believed Napulan left the village and crossed the river for Barangay Saring.
It was raining that night, according to Senior Inspector Cyril Octavio of Miag-ao. The strong current river’s water likely overwhelmed Napulan, he theorized.
On Saturday in the municipality of Balasan, a woman fell into a deep canal in Barangay Kinalkalan and drowned.
Police Officer Ramon Allan Elambre of Balsan identified the woman as 33-year-old Jonalyn Ortiga.
Around 12 noon, Ortiga left home with 11-year-old niece Mary Joy Valenzuela to buy lunch, police said.
While Ortiga fell into the canal on the side of the national highway, Valenzuela managed to hang on to something until concerned passengers of a passing van spotted her and rescued her./PN
