MANILA – The Philippines immediately made its presence felt in the 2017 ASEAN School Games after winning two gold medals in athletics at the start of the competition on Saturday in Singapore.

Karl Aquino topped the long jump boys with 7.02m. John Rafael Rafols finished third.
Aquino — a native of Biñan, Laguna and silver medalist in the 2017 Palarong Pambansa in San Jose, Antique — played his first and last ASEAN School Games as he was set to turn 18.

James Orduna also dominated the 3,000m boys, which was included in the School Games for the first time.
Settling for bronze medals were Zamboanga City native Edwin Giron in the 800m run and Cagayan Valley’s Cherry Mae Banatao in the high jump girls.

Failing to land a medal spot were Tyrone Flores in discus throw, Veruel Verdadero and Jovanie Calixto in 100m boys, Riza Jane Valiente and Marjun Sulleza in 400m hurdles, and Bianca Combate and Eliza Cuyom in 100m girls.

Meanwhile, the Philippine girls’ volleyball team, led by Ejiya Laure and Jaja Maraguinot, opened its campaign with a 25-18, 25-20, 25-16 straight-set victory over Malaysia at Republic Polytechnic.

The Philippine delegation hopes to surpass its fourth-place finish in 2014, when it bagged 11 gold, 14 silver, and 22 bronze medals./PN
