ILOILO City – Two speeding public utility jeepneys collided in Barangay Alaguisoc, Jordan town in the island province of Guimaras. At least 17 passengers were injured, police said.

Both the “John Lawrence” and the “J Brothers” jeepneys were bound for the town proper, according to Senior Inspector Edwin Belarmino.

“The passengers said the jeepneys, both from Jordan wharf, were racing against each other,” the municipal police chief said.

All 17 injured passengers were confined in the Dr. Catalino G. Nava Provincial Hospital in the town.

Belarmino identified the drivers as 47-year-old Dominador Diamante (“John Lawrence”) and 40-year-old Danny Sabid (“J Brothers”) – both residents of Barangay Napandong, Nueva Valencia.

“Both drivers were liable to their passengers,” stressed Belarmino. “What happened was proof of their negligence.”

“J Brothers” was trying to overtake “John Lawrence” at around 3:50 p.m. on Friday when Sabid saw an incoming truck, Belarmino said, citing accounts from passengers.

Twenty-four passengers were on board “J Brothers” while “John Lawrence” was laden with 18 passengers, police said.

Both jeepneys had the same route – Jordan-Nueva Valencia.

“J Brothers” crashed against “John Lawrence” when Sabid tried to maneuver it back to the proper lane. Both jeepneys fell on their side as a result, said Belarmino.

Diamante and Sabid were detained at the Jordan police station custodial facility.

They were facing charges for reckless imprudence resulting to multiple frustrated homicide.

“I warn all drivers of public utility vehicle against racing against each other,” Belarmino said. “They are supposed to protect the lives of their passengers.”/PN
