KALIBO, Aklan – Two towns, a hospital, and an agency in Aklan were nominated for the Red Orchid Award.

Red Orchid Award is the Department of Health’s (DOH) search for 100-percent tobacco-free provinces, municipalities, cities, government offices, government hospitals, and DOH Centers for Health Development.

Aklan nominees include Buruanga and Ibajay, Dr. Rafael S. Tumbokon Memorial Hospital (provincial hospital), and PhilHealth-Aklan.

If they qualify after the validation, Buruanga, the provincial hospital and PhilHealth-Aklan will get elevated to the “Hall of Fame,” which is given to entities conferred with the award for three consecutive times.

According to the Provincial Health Office (PHO), the nominees will be validated for 2015 and 2016. Qualifying for both years means getting two trophies.

The Department of Health is conducting validations this month. Red Orchid winners are usually recognized by the end of the year.

To qualify for the award, a town must have an antismoking ordinance and a smoking cessation clinic, and introduce innovations and good practices to discourage smoking in public places.

After Buruanga and Ibajay won Red Orchid Awards, other towns crafted their respective antismoking ordinances to join the contest: Kalibo, Tangalan, Malinao, and Makato, said the PHO.

Aklan is also aiming to be a Red Orchid awardee in 2020. The PHO said this can happen if the provincial hospital, the PHO and the provincial capitol become totally smoke-free. (PIA/PN)
