ILOILO City – About 400 people gathered on July 14 for an information, education and communication (IEC) campaign on government programs and advocacies in Buenavista, Guimaras.

General Harold Clavite, Philippine Information Agency (PIA) director, led the IEC campaign composed of multisectoral and barangay fora focusing on the country’s chairmanship of the 2017 Association of Southeast Nations (ASEAN).

Clavite said part of the job of the agency is to educate the public on accurate and relevant information as well as to remind them not to spread false information.

“Gusto namin makipag-usap nang madalas sa taong bayan para ma-remind ang ating mga kababayan kung ano ang responsibilidad natin, kasi kung may hawak kang cellphone mayroon kang responsibilidad, hindi ito ibig sabihin na kahit ano mapick-up mo pwede mo nang ipakalat,” said Clavite.

More than 200 municipal and barangay officials, students and representatives of the national government agencies, nongovernment organizations and businesses attended the multisectoral forum held at the Agri-Tourism Convention Center of Guimaras State College.

During the forum, Clavite and PIA – Iloilo Information Officer II Leonard Pineda I. presented the ASEAN and its benefits.
Participants were also briefed on the freedom of information by PIA 6 Director Atty. Janet Mesa and on the tax reform package by economists from the Department of Finance.

The Philippine National Police through Senior Inspector Idel Hermonso, chief of the operations and plans office of the Guimaras police, also updated them on the peace and order situation of the province.

In his message, Mayor Eugene Reyes thanked PIA for making Buenavista a part of the IEC campaign. The activities also gave them the opportunity to raise their queries and concerns on these government initiatives.

Clavite assured the participants that their concerns will be brought to appropriate agencies or to the Office of Secretary Martin Andanar and President Duterte.

The IEC campaign in Buenavista, Guimaras was the first in Western Visayas. Another multi-sectoral forum will be organized in the Iloilo province. (PIA/PN)
