ILOILO City – The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) is hiring 5,000 young people in Western Visayas for its Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES) this summer season.

According to Assistant Regional Director Salome Siaton, the summer jobs will be for 70 days or almost two months. Previously, this was only good for a maximum of 50 days.

The SPES is mandated by Republic Act 9547 (An Act to Help Poor But Deserving Students Pursue Their Education By Encouraging Their Employment During Summer and/or Christmas Vacations, Through Incentives Granted to Employers).

DOLE-6 has a P35-million budget for SPES this summer, said Amy Judicpa, information officer of the regional agency.

Students must be between 15 to 30 years old and their parents’ combined net income after tax must not exceed P36,000 per annum.

The summer jobbers must also have passing grades.

In the case of dropouts, they must have passing grades during the last school year/term they attended.

Already, 19 employers from Aklan, 19 in Antique, 15 in Capiz, eight in Guimaras, and 59 in Iloilo expressed interest to join the SPES, said Judicpa.

Interested students and employers can coordinate with their local Public Service Employment Office./PN
