SAN JOSE, Antique – To protect the public from exposure to cigarette smoke that causes serious damage to health, nine of Antique’s 18 municipalities have anti-smoking ordinances.

According to Information Officer Irene Dulduco of the Provincial Health Office (PHO), the municipalities were Pandan, Hamtic, Culasi, Patnongon, Belison, Sebaste, Libertad, Laua-an, and Tibiao.

They were advocating for tobacco control, said Dulduco during the meeting of the Antique Association of Information Officers hosted by the local government of San Remigio, Antique.

PHO is urging other municipalities to also have similar ordinances to safeguard the public’s health against the ill-effects of smoking.

Dulduco also said that the municipality of Pandan is Antique’s entry to the Red Orchid Award of the Department of Health (DOH) and is undergoing regional and national evaluation.

The Red Orchid Award recognizes local government units, government offices and health facilities that are strictly enforcing tobacco control measures.

President Rodrigo Duterte signed recently Executive Order No. 26 which called for smoke-free environments in public and enclosed places.

The executive order stressed that scientific evidence has unequivocally established tobacco consumption and exposure to tobacco smoke as causing death, diseases and disabilities leading to devastating health, social, economic and environmental consequences.

Tobacco smoke also burdens families, the poor and the national and local health systems, the executive order noted. (PIA-Antique/PN)
