MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte has appointed Commissioner Sheriff Abas as new chairman of the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

“Pursuant to the provisions of Section 16, Article VII of the 1987 Constitution and existing laws, you are hereby nominated Chairman, Commission on Elections, for a term expiring on Feb. 2, 2022, vice K. Andres D. Bautista,” Abas’ appointment paper read.

Duterte signed Abas’ appointment on Nov. 22.

Bautista resigned from Comelec last month amid allegations he illegally amassed nearly P1 billion in unexplained wealth.

Abas, a lawyer, is a nephew of Moro Islamic Liberation Front chief peace negotiator Mohagher Iqbal.

He served as chief legal officer of the Civil Service Commission in Cotabato before his appointment as Comelec commissioner./PN
