ILOILO City – Ordinance No. 14 series of 1990 that regulated the city’s public plazas was no longer responsive to the times and must be amended, said Councilor Joshua Alim.

This ordinance even preceded the Local Government Code that was enacted in 1991, he stressed.

“Let’s align it with the national law to avoid conflict,” said Alim.

City Administrator Hernando Galvez welcomed the councilor’s proposal. He said Ordinance No. 14 series of 1990 was approved during the administration of then mayor Rodolfo Ganzon or nearly three decades ago.

“It has been partly amended by Republic Act 7160 (Local Government Code),” said Galvez.

Alim recently warned against the closure of Jaro and Mandurriao district plazas for income-generating activities.

He reminded colleagues of the resolution they unanimously passed disallowing the closure of public plazas.

“Ang mga plaza himuon naman nila bulogasan. Plazas are beyond the commerce of man,” stressed Alim, citing the Local Government Code which prohibits the closure of public plazas except for some occasions but that the closure must not be more than three days./PN
