BACOLOD City – Mayor Magdaleno Peña of Moises Padilla, Negros Occidental called on the suspected leader of the Beria drug group to surrender.

Ricky Serenio, the No. 1 illegal drug suspect in Negros Island Region, claimed to be a part of the Beria group. He was arrested on Jan. 8 for grave coercion.

The law enforcers who Serenio claimed were getting protection money from the Beria drug group were going after the alleged group leader Beria Tolentino, Peña said in a radio interview.

A source who requested anonymity told Panay News that Tolentino already left the Philippines and Serenio is now running their alleged trade.

Tolentino is a resident of this capital city but has a house in Talisay City, Negros Occidental.

Authorities said the Beria drug group started operating in Negros Occidental and this capital city in 2012.

Serenio, 34, is currently in the protective custody of Peña and son Miguel, mayor of the municipality of Pulupandan.

The drug suspect was taken to the Pulupandan police station custodial facility on Friday, Jan. 13 immediately after the Regional Trial Court Branch 54 granted his motion for protective custody.

Serenio felt his life was in danger and it was with the Peñas that he felt safe, police said.

He will be in the custody of the father-and-son mayors for 30 days, confirmed Peña, a consultant for the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA).

Serenio sought for protective custody pending his application for the government’s Witness Protection Program.

The court granted the motion after the suspect filed an affidavit tagging several Philippine National Police, National Bureau of Investigation and PDEA personnel, and two media workers to the drug trade.

Peña said they might ask the court to extend their protective custody of Serenio./PN
