SAN JOSE, Antique – The Lipata Port in Culasi, Antique can accommodate delegates of the Palarong Pambansa 2017 if they decide to take roll-on, roll-off (roro) vessels, Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) Antique manager Erdie Cocoy said.

The port, however, is quite far from San Jose, the province’s capital town.

Lipata Port is almost 95 kilometers away from the town of San Jose.

Cocoy said Lipata Port has a docking area that can accommodate bigger shipping vessels.

It also has a deeper berthing area compared to that of San Jose Port, which was proposed earlier to be used as gateway for the athletic delegations, Cocoy added.

Cocoy said San Jose Port can only accommodate smaller shipping vessels because it has a shallow berthing area.

“There’s already a request for dredging and expansion in San Jose Port but it has yet to be approved by the PPA national office,” Cocoy said.

Cocoy said PPA Antique is willing to coordinate with the provincial government and support the upcoming Palarong Pambansa on April 23 to 29. (PNA)

Gov. Rhodora J. Cadiao was previously reported to have expressed disgust that PPA did not inform her office about the need to upgrade the San Jose Port.

Cadiao said the provincial government has been sending Antique Provincial Board member Fernando Corvera and even San Jose mayor Elmer Untaran to coordinate with the PPA as part of the Palaro preparations.

“The regions in Mindanao have been asking me if they could transport their athletes through this port,” the governor said.

She said it was only lately when a sonar inspection was conducted that they discovered that roro vessels, such as the St. Francis of Asisi, could not dock at the port. (PNA)
