BACOLOD City – Critics of the high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) may have found an ally in Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara.

The senator vowed to help sort the issue widely believed to be adversely affecting the local sugar industry.

“We will wait for the recommendations after the inquiry in [the House of Representatives]. They will act on that,” said Angara, who graced the 19th Charter Day celebration of Talisay City, Negros Occidental on Saturday.

Fifteen lawmakers wanted the House to hold an inquiry in aid of legislation on the “impact of the importation, use and sale of the HFCS in the Philippines on the sustainability of the sugar industry.”

They and other critics claimed there was massive importation and widespread use of the alternative sweetener, causing the local sugar industry to lose billions of pesos in revenue and jobs for farmworkers.

Furthermore, the Visayan bloc in the House will reportedly sign a manifesto pushing for the committee inquiry.

“We share the concern for local industries. We want to promote local industries,” Angara said.

ON ICT

Meanwhile he told a news conference at Bar 21 here the government wants to replicate information and communications technology (ICT) industry practices in Negros Occidental and this capital city.

According to Angara, active support from the government and private sectors and advocates enabled the industry to create 30,000 jobs, something possible only in Manila and other urban areas.

The senator hopes that ICT becomes a major economic driver in the next two years and that 1.8 million jobs get created by 2020./PN
