ILOILO City – Will city councilors accept the challenge of colleague Councilor Plaridel Nava that all of them undergo a drug test?
Nava posed the challenge last week yet and only two councilors expressly said they would do it – Joshua Alim and Jeffrey Ganzon.
Councilor Eduardo Peñaredondo, majority leader, also indicated openness to Nava’s idea.
“I always hear Iloilo City being labeled the ‘most shabu-lized’ city because its councilors were not interested to undergo drug testing,” said Nava.
Drug surrenderers were being encouraged to undergo drug testing and even Mayor Jed Patrick urged city hall employees to take the test, too, said Nava, “But there never was a time when members of the city council voluntarily submitted themselves to the test.”
“The city council must be freed from doubts that any of its members is using illegal drugs,” said Nava.
He suggested that they simultaneously submit to a drug test using blood samples and not urine.
“It would be nice to hear people say the city council is drug-free and we, city councilors, are not drug users,” Nava said.
Ganzon welcomed Nava’s proposal.
“We should be role models dapat. No problem,” he said.
Nava hoped they could do the test before he takes an indefinite leave of absence starting April 30.
“It is something we have not done since we started the campaign against illegal drugs,” he noted./PN
