BACOLOD City – An encounter took place between the elements of the 79th Infantry Battalion in Negros Oriental and members of New People’s Army (NPA) on Friday afternoon in Sitio Agpapatao, Barangay Sandayao, Guihulngan City.

About 30 rebels reportedly engaged in a 30-minute fire fight with the soldiers led by 2nd Lieutenant Norman Sorila while in combat operation in the area.

The reinforcement led by 1st Lieutenant Alex Bunagan also encountered the withdrawing NPA at the vicinity of Sitio Somil in Barangay Binobohan in the city. The fight lasted for 15 minutes.

The government troops recovered one unit of M14 assault rifle with Serial Number 1406288, 260 live bullets of 60 machine guns, jungle pack, and subversive documents.

No casualties were reported as of this writing.

Superintendent Arnel Arpon, acting police chief of Guihulngan City, disclosed that an armed group from Cebu arrived in the city.

The group is composed of around 30 members, including one woman.

He said the group was asking residents how to go to the mountainous area of Guihulngan.

The residents immediately reported the incident to authorities. Arpon confirmed the individuals were members of the NPA./PN
