KALIBO, Aklan – This year’s edition of the Kalibo Sto. Niño Ati-atihan Festival wraps up today. The local government has again reiterated its appeal to revelers not to smoke.
The Sangguniang Bayan passed an ordinance banning smoking in public places and conveyances. It also covers the use of electronic cigarettes.
Mayor William Lachica said the ordinance is yet to take effect this March. However, the local government is already starting its information dissemination campaign at the Kalibo Public Market.
Already, two malls here are prohibiting people from smoking within their premises.
Local smoke-free advocates of Kalibo have also held a street dance party around the festival area of the Ati-atihan. Donning white shirts, they carried streamers asking people to avoid smoking.
Meanwhile, the Provincial Health Office is set to air an info commercial about Capiz as a smoke-free destination.
The info commercial, to be aired in local cable television channels, will show the testimony of two Aklanons who had been addicted to smoking.
Out of the 17 towns in Aklan, at least eight towns have anti-smoking ordinances. (PNA)
