KALIBO, Aklan – The provincial government of Aklan urged the locals to participate in anti-rabies programs.

Aklan only had a 33.44 percent vaccination rate due to the unavailability of rabies vaccine last year.

The Sangguniang Panlalawigan requested the town mayors to support the mass vaccination of dogs in their respective municipalities.

The provincial rabies control committee sought the help of board members to compel the local chief executives to implement the Anti-Rabies Act of 2007 through these mass vaccinations.

Moreover, the Department of Agriculture allotted P2.95 million to be used in buying 5,950 vials for the barangay immunization programs in the province.

Treatment centers are also providing free treatment vaccines for animal-bitten patients.

Animal bites for the first quarter this year recorded 1,464 cases, data from the Provincial Health Office (PHO) showed.

Seventy-five percent of these rabies cases were from dogs, cats and other animals, both domesticated and stray.

The province also reported 5,838 animal bites last year or 7 percent of the total 83,166 animal bites in Western Visayas, making it the third leading cause of death in Aklan.

Rabies accounted for 200 to 300 deaths each year in the country; one-third of these are among children under 15 years old./PN
