MANILA – BaliPure snatched the Premier V-League Open Conference title after defeating Pocari Sweat Lady Warriors 25-20, 19-25, 25-23, 26-24 in Game 2 of the best-of-three finals at the San Juan Arena.

Finals MVP Grethcel Soltones scored 21 – on 17 attacks, three service aces and a block – to help BaliPure capture on Wednesday night its first-ever V-League championship since entering the league last season.

Aiko Urdas added 16 markers while Risa Sato contributed 15 points for Water Defenders, which exacted revenge on Lady Warriors for its finals loss in the Reinforced Conference.

Hindi namin aakalain na aabot kami dito,” said BaliPure head coach Roger Gorayeb. “We almost didn’t make it to the semis. We almost didn’t make it to the finals. But the girls persevered.”

After trailing early in the first set, BaliPure rallied back behind Soltones to take a 16-13 lead. Pocari tried to keep the gap close but hits from Urdas and Jasmine Nabor clinched the set for Water Defenders.

It lost the second set but BaliPure regained its form in the third frame when it built a 20-14 lead. Pocari cut the deficit 23-24 before Soltones scored for Water Defenders a drop shot for a 2-1 set advantage.

Both teams had a tight exchange in the fourth set before BaliPure pulled an 18-14 edge. Lady Warriors responded with a run to force a 24-all deadlock but back-to-back hits by Soltones and Nabor pushed Water Defenders to victory.

Myla Pablo top-scored with 21, including 17 attacks, while Maricar Nepomuceno added 16 markers for Pocari, which suffered its first finals defeat since moving to V-League last year./PN
