BAROTAC Nuevo National Comprehensive High School bagged the 2017 U-15 Governor’s Cup football tournament title after beating Santa Barbara Football Club 1-0 in the championship game at the Iloilo Sports Complex.

Adrian Diaz scored the go-ahead goal for Barotac Nuevo as he drained the penalty kick in the 42nd minute on Sunday after his teammate Kenz Brian Valenzuela was tackled from inside the box.

Barotac Nuevo reached the finals match after scoring 5-0 over I-Pagasa in the semifinals, while Santa Barbara defeated Iloilo Young Booters, 1-0.

Diaz was later named part of the mythical team as striker. Valenzuela and Mhel Anthony Baylon were picked from among the midfielders, while Manuel Guzman and Brian Bedia were part of the defenders and goalkeepers.

From Santa Barbara, named in the Mythical 11 were Josmar Von Sornito (defenders) and Nhelvin Leonora (midfielder).

Meanwhile Iloilo Young Booters salvaged a third-place finish in the tournament after a come-from-behind victory over I-Pagasa 3-2.

“We are happy with the turnout of this tournament,” said Iloilo project director for football Edwin Caro Laru-an. “We are planning to hold this every year.”

National U-15 football team head coach and Barotac Nuevo native Emelio “Chieffy” Caligdong and Iloilo sports consultant Pablito Araneta were present at the championship match./PN
