ILOILO City – The recent week-long Brigada Eskwela was successful and proved that the bayanihan spirit was still being practiced, according to the Department of Education (DepEd) Region 6.

Brigada Eskwela is an annual nationwide voluntary effort of teachers, parents, students, community members, and other organizations to do minor repairs and cleanups in their schools in preparation for the start of the school year.

“Thank you to all stakeholders nga naghatag sang ila mga donations kag nagbulig repair kag paminta sang aton mga schools,” said DepEd-6 spokesperson Lea Belleza.

DepEd-6 planned to make Brigada Eskwela not just a weeklong activity but an all-year-round activity, she revealed.

This year, according to Belelza, nga nakalikom kita sang mga donations nga ginhatag sa mga eskwelahan naton kag nag-make-over sang aton eskwelahan. Nakita naton kag nabatyagan nga ang aton bayanihan spirit is still alive.”

Belleza also said DepEd-6 would be coordinating with concerned agencies for the opening of classes on June 5.

For the traffic concern, DepEd would be seeking the assistance of the Philippine National Police.

Regarding the expected mushrooming of street vendors outside schools, Belleza said DepEd will coordinate with the Department of Health to address health and sanitation concerns.

The Department of Trade and Industry will also be sought regarding the regulation of school supplies, and specifically their availability and prices.

Belleza also reminded teachers to start setting up their class programs.

“Everything should be in place already by June 5 so that on that day, it will be a teaching-learning engagement na. Wala sang mabitbit sang silhig kag maninlo pa,” said Belleza.

Brigada Eskwela began in 2003 as part of the Oplan Balik Eskwela Program and National Maintenance Week of DepEd. It encouraged volunteers give time, effort and even donate materials such as paint, cement, lumber and other materials, which could be used for minor repairs and building.

The 2017 Brigada Eskwela was themed, “Isang DepEd, Isang Pamayanan, Isang Bayanihan Para sa Handa at Ligtas na Paaralan.”/PN
