MANILA – The San Miguel Beermen survived a huge endgame run by the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings for a 72-70 victory in the 2016-2017 Oppo PBA Philippine Cup on Sunday night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Alex Cabagnot led the way with 16 points for the defending champion Beermen, which stretched its winning run to six to remain on top of the standings with a 8-1 win-loss record.
Ilonggo Ronald Tubid chipped in 12 markers, while Arwind Santos and June Mar Fajardo combined 19 points for the Beermen, which has assured a quarterfinals seat.
The Kings had a strong start for an early 11-4 lead but the Beermen was quick to respond behind Cabagnot, Gabby Espinas and Yancy de Ocampo to come to within 17-15.
The Kings was able to increase the lead to eight early in the second quarter but Cabagnot and Fajardo combined for consecutive points to take a 32-31 edge at halftime on De Ocampo’s basket.
After an exchange of leads by both squads early in the third quarter, the Beermen leaned on consecutive points by Cabagnot, Santos and Espinas for a 53-46 advantage on a three-pointer by Tubid.
The Kings rallied early in the final frame to force deadlock twice with the last at 58-all. The Beermen then dropped a 7-0 scoring run on a triple by Tubid and inside hits by Santos and Fajardo for a 69-60 edge.
With the Beermen holding on to a 72-64 lead, the Kings converted back-to-back triples from LA Tenorio and Joe Devance to come to within 72-70. They had a chance to force overtime but Tenorio’s game-tying attempt was thwarted by Santos.
“I knew from the start it was going to be tight game for us,” Beermen head coach Leo Austria said. “The energy has gone down from our game against Blackwater (last Friday), pero buti na lang may konti pang laman ang gas tanks ng players.”
Japeth Aguilar finished with double-double 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Solomon Mercado added 11 markers for the Kings, which dropped to ninth place in the standings with a 3-4 slate./PN
