MANILA – The College of St. Benilde Lady Blazers bucked another slow start to score a 12-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-19 win over the San Beda Red Lionesses in the NCAA Season 92 women’s volleyball tournament at the San Juan Arena.
Rachel Austero led the way with 13 points for the defending champions Lady Blazers, which moved up to solo second place in the standings with a 6-1 win-loss slate behind league-leader San Sebastian College Lady Stags (6-0).
Jeanette Panaga, Ranya Musa and Arianne Daguil chipped in 11 markers apiece for the Lady Blazers, which sealed its place in the Final Four round of the women’s volleyball.
After dropping the opening set, the Lady Blazers regained control in the second frame behind Austero, Panaga and Musa to build a sizeable lead. It was almost the same story in the third set before the Lady Blazers hanged on to a win.
Both teams had a tight exchange in the fourth set with the Red Lionesses trying to stay alive. But consecutive conversions from Panaga and Musa followed by errors by the Red Lionesses handed the win to the Lady Blazers.
Despite the victory, Lady Blazers head coach Michael Cariño remained frustrated with the performance of his squad against the Red Lionesses after another slow start for them.
“Sobrang bagal ng first set namin. Sa sobrang focus ng team ko, nakatingin na lang sa kabila,” said Carino. “Ang sabi ko nga alam naman namin ang gagalawin ng kalaban pero dapat galawin namin ‘yung laro namin.”
Franchesca Racraquin top-scored with 17 points, while Nieza Viray added 14 markers for the Red Lionesses, which slid down to a 5-3 win-loss record endangering its Final Four spot./PN
