MANILA – The University of the Philippines Lady Maroons kept its Final Four hopes alive with a 25-14, 25-27, 25-21, 25-12 win over the National University Lady Bulldogs in the UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball tournament on Sunday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Kathy Bersola played her best game of the season tallying a career-high eight blocks to finish with 14 points for the Lady Maroons, which registered its second consecutive win to improve to a 7-5 win-loss slate.

Bersola, who is playing on her final year, held her own against 6-foot-5 Jaja Santiago of the Lady Bulldogs to boost the Lady Maroons’ Final Four bid as it moved up to fourth place in the standings.

Isa Molde and Diana Carlos also chipped in 14 hits each while unheralded Aie Gannaban scored a career-high 13 points for the Lady Maroons, which also avenged its first round defeat to the Lady Bulldogs.

“Hindi ‘yung bawi ‘yung main focus kundi ‘yung mag-perform sila ng every game since,” said Lady Maroons assistant coach Rald Ricafort. “Every game kailangan i-minimize ‘yung naging errors namin na nagpatalo sa amin nang sunod-sunod before.”

Meanwhile, the Ateneo Lady Eagles leaned on the career-game of Negrense Kassandra Gequillana to score a 25-13, 25-13, 25-11 straight-set victory over the Adamson University Lady Falcons.

Gequillana finished with 11 points to lead the way for the Lady Eagles in the first of two warm-up matches before its much-anticipated showdown with defending champion De La Salle University Lady Spikers.

After a week-long break, the Lady Eagles will face another also-ran in University of the East Lady Warriors on Sunday and will have six days to prepare for the April 8 duel with rival Lady Spikers at the Big Dome./PN
