MANILA – The Blackwater Elite leaned on the second half exploits of Rey Mark “Mac” Belo and Shej Roi Sumang to score a come-from-behind 103-100 win over the Alaska Aces in the 2016-2017 Oppo PBA Philippine Cup on Sunday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Down by as much as nine points, 57-48, on a triple by Aces’ Dondon Hontiveros, the Elite relied on consecutive hits by Belo as the Elite snatched the lead at 62-61 on a triple by Ronjay Buenafe.
From there, it was a see-saw battle between the two squads until the score tied at 71-all following a conversion by Sumang. The Elite, however, grabbed the lead heading into the fourth on a three-pointer by Sumang.
The Elite continued its hot shooting in the final frame behind Belo, Sumang and Raymond Aguilar for a 92-78 advantage. The Aces rallied to within three points but seven straight points by Sumang gave the Elite a seven point edge.
After another basket by Sumang mounted a 101-98 edge for the Elite. The Aces made its last push on a basket by Calvin Abueva, 101-100, but two free throws by Dennis Miranda gave the Elite a 103-100 lead before Abueva missed a three-point attempt.
Belo, the top-overall pick in the recent PBA Rookie Draft, led the way with 21 points, while Sumang added 19 markers, with 17 coming in the second half, for the Elite, which moved up to a 5-4 win-loss slate.
Buenafe finished with 16 markers, on four-of-six shooting from the three-point arc, while Aguilar had 10 points for the Elite, which moved closer to its second PBA playoffs appearance.
Abueva and Jvee Casio finished with 23 points apiece, while Vic Manuel had 13 markers for the Aces, which slipped to 4-4 tying the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings and Phoenix Fuel Masters./PN
