BORACAY – Boracay will be the first island destination in the country with a centralized wastewater system upon the completion of the Boracay Island Water Company’s (BIWC) water projects in the next five years.

The completion of the BIWC water projects will make this island resort the second area in the Philippines with a centralized wastewater system next to Metro Manila.

The water projects will also complete the island’s master plan to ensure sustainable environment and tourism, according to BIWC business operations chief Bianca Eunicia Aldaba.

BIWC is a part of the Manila Water Company through its subsidiary Manila Water Philippine Ventures and Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority.

The Manila Water Company has a 25-year concession agreement with the island that will end on 2034.

In 2019, BIWC will start building its third sewage treatment plant in Barangay Yapak, which can treat 5 million liters of water per day.

In the same year, the Barangay Yapak sewer network project will also begin.

The sewer network project will aid the conveyance of wastewater from households and commercial establishments through its 24-kilometer water lines and 11 lift stations.

Meanwhile, the upgrading of the Sitio Pinaungon pumping station in Barangay Balabag is ongoing.

BIWC said the upgrade will improve the pumping station’s capacity to source water from 4 million liters per day to 6 million liters per day.

The upgrade includes the extension of the pumping station and installation of new pumps and is expected to be done by the second quarter of 2018.

The existing sewage treatment plant in Barangay Manoc-manoc with a 5-million-liters-per-day capacity will also be upgraded starting next year. Its structure will be modified to comply with the standards that the Department of Environment and Natural Resources has set.

The Barangay Manoc-manoc plant upgrade will also include the construction of a new treatment plant with a 3.5-million-liters-per-day capacity.

The BIWC will also rehabilitate next year the Barangay Balabag sewage treatment plant with a 6.5-million-liters-per-day capacity by replacing its electromechanical works and retrofitting.

The existing wastewater network in Barangay Balabag will also be upgraded by modifying its lift stations and the installation of a 2.7-kilometer pipe from Sitio Pinaungon to Sitio Ambulong. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
