THREE Filipino world champions will step on stage as the Boxers of the Year in the 17th Gabriel “Flash” Elorde Boxing Awards and Banquet of Champions on March 25 at the Manila Hotel.

International Boxing Federation (IBF) flyweight champion Johnriel Casimero, IBF super flyweight titleholder Jerwin Ancajas and WBO bantamweight king Marlon Tapales have been chosen to receive the highest citation for bagging world titles last year.

Casimero reclaimed the world title by beating Thai Amnat Ruenroeng in May 2016. He retained the title with a TKO win over Briton Charlie Edwards in London three months later. He ended the year with a ring record of 23-3-0 with 15 knockouts.

Ancajas captured his first-ever world title by scoring a unanimous decision upset over Puerto Rican McJoe Arroyo, who was unbeaten in 17 bouts (8 KOs) before his match with the Filipino.

Tapales, for his part, claimed the WBO diadem with a come-from-behind 11th round knockout victory over Thai boxer Pungluang Sor Singyu, who knocked down the Filipino twice early in the match.

The three world champions will be conferred the highest honors in Philippine pro boxing in the annual Elorde Memorial Boxing Awards, held in honor of the legendary Filipino boxer Elorde, who was an undefeated world junior lightweight king from 1960-67.

The awards rites will be presented by the Elorde family, led by The Flash’s wife Laura, in the formal rites where former champions will be enshrined to immortality through the “Casting of the Fists,” a major highlight of the ceremonies.

The boxers whose fists will be cast this year are former WBO bantamweight titlist Gerry Peñalosa, former WBC lightweight champion Rolando Pascua, former IBF super flyweight titleholder Tacy Macalos and former IBF flyweight king Dodie Boy Peñalosa.

An UAAP official has vehemently denied various reports that the statistics in the UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball tournament, especially in excellent sets, is being rigged.

An official, who spoke to Buzzer Beater, said that the tabulation of the UAAP Volleyball Information System (VIS) is accurate especially on the excellent sets of Ateneo Lady Eagles’ Julia Morado and De La Salle University Lady Spikers’ Kim Fajardo.

Reports of alleged rigging surfaced after the statistics of the UAAP first round of eliminations was released, showing Morado was slightly ahead of Fajardo in the Best Setter race.

“The allegations are not true,” said the UAAP official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. “And why will the league do that? What will get out of it aside from tarnishing the league’s reputation.”

“Maybe it is just borne out by volleyball fans frustration as they seem to overestimate or underestimate na akala nila ganoon karami ini-score o sinet nung mga volleyball idols nila,” he added.

Lady Eagles’ Sherwin Malonzo, a seasoned VIS official, said in an interview with Fox Sports that league statisticians have parameters in tallying if a set is categorized as “regular” or “excellent”.

“I personally reviewed some of the videos and I think that the stats are accurate so fans from both ends have nothing to worry about,” Malonzo said. “It doesn’t mean that just because a setter is able to set and nag-score, ‘excellent’ na kaagad.”

“There are factors that you consider, like for example, in cases where the attack is faced with a double block, the set is then recorded as a normal set. Double blocks usually happen when a team has poor reception,” he added./PN
