AFTER its unceremonious exit from the playoff contention in the PBA Governors’ Cup, Alaska Aces hopes to play the spoiler’s role when it battles Rain or Shine Elasto Painters tonight to close out its season campaign.

Aces head coach Alex Compton expects his team to give a good fight – even score an upset – against Painters at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City.

“We don’t have a chance but we’re still going to compete,” Compton said. “We just want a win to close out our campaign. The season’s over at the sound of that last buzzer on Wednesday.”

Aces’ hopes of reaching the quarterfinals were doomed when Blackwater Elite beat Alaska’s fellow eliminated squad GlobalPort Batang Pier 118-107 on Sunday night.

“I was really praying (for a GlobalPort win last Sunday). I was at the church. Unfortunately [my prayer] was not answered,” Compton said. “But Blackwater really earned that victory. They did a good job.”

Alaska had a poor start in the conference. It lost its first six matches before racking up three straight wins. But Aces encountered a huge roadblock in its match against Meralco Bolts.

“I was mad after the Meralco game. In a game where we needed our best effort, we brought less than our best,” Compton said. “I think the bottom line was we didn’t squeeze out wins and a few games that we really needed that were crucial.”

“It was a crazy conference. It’s been a crazy year. We’re done for the whole season, and there’s going to be a whole lot of time for looking back and analyzing and reflecting, and we got to make us better.”

ILONGGA UST VOLLEY CAPTAIN

Shannen Palec was named the new team captain of the University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses as the team prepares for the UAAP Season 80 volleyball tournament.

A native of the component city of Passi in Iloilo province, Palec will do co-captain chores with libero Rica Jane Rivera, replacing the high-leaping spiker Cherry Rondina, said Golden Tigresses head coach Emilio Reyes.

Si Shannen na iyong pinaka-ate ng lahat. This time, bago siya um-exit, ma-exercise niya naman iyong pagiging leader na in authority talaga siya,” Reyes told Varsitarian.net.

Palec, who will be playing in her final year in the upcoming season, said she does not mind her position in the squad but is willing to do everything to help her team reach its goals in UAAP Season 80.

“Expected na ako na mag-lead sa team kasi ako na iyong pinaka-senior. Para sa akin may pressure pero iniisip ko lang kung paano ko sila ili-lead at paano madadala iyong mga games,” said Palec, who also played for Cocolife in Philippine Superliga.

In preparation for upcoming matches, Golden Tigresses is set to suit up in the Philippine Superliga Grand Prix. Its sponsor is yet to be announced.

Golden Tigresses is hoping to improve on its third-place finish in the last UAAP season, where it reached the Final Four stage for the first time in years but lost to the eventual champion De La Salle University Lady Spikers./PN
