ILOILO City – Former Ateneo Lady Eagles stars Bea Tan and Angeline “Dzi” Gervacio proved too formidable to defeat, as they trounced the tandem from Southwestern University (SWU) – Cebu, 20-22, 25-27, during the 14th Iloilo Paraw Regatta National Women’s Beach Volleyball Tournament finale on Sunday at the Joe III Garden Beach Front, Villa Arevalo.

The Beach Volleyball Republic (BVR) co-founders managed to dominate in two sets the SWU Lady Cobras dynamic duo of Floremel Rodriguez and Therese Ramas.

The Lady Cobras survived a tough challenge from Alexa Poledario and Erjane Magdato of the University of Negros Occidental – Recoletos Bacolod, 21-10, 10-21, 15-10, to set up the championship match with the veteran sand snakes, but suffered an end-game collapse to fall short of the “Mayor Jed Patrick E. Mabilog Cup” crown.

Aside from Tan and Gervacio, Charo Soriano and former Adamson “Queen Falcon” Amanda Villanueva also graced the competition as the other BVR team in contention.

The number of participants in this year’s competition has doubled, from five in 2016 to 10 in this year’s iteration of the tourney.

The other competing tandems were from Iloilo City (Dhamy Demontaño and Jackie Estoquiao), Central Philippine University (Glaudine Troncoso and Mika Yu), University of St. La Salle – Bacolod (Shaira Lim and Julyna Villanueva; Tonnievyle Factor and Graciela Mellizo), University of San Jose – Recoletos Cebu (Linlyn Torado and Jessa Marie Jorquia), and Foundation University – Dumaguete (Charmaigne Jayme and Jasslyn Genconcillo).

Last year, SWU emerged as the Open Category champion with UNO-R finishing1st runner-up. Team Iloilo’s Demontaño and Fiola Ceballos, now a Generika Lifesavers spiker in the Philippine SuperLiga, came in at 2nd runner-up./PN
