MANILA – Blackwater Elite secured a quarterfinals seat in the PBA Governors’ Cup after defeating GlobalPort Batang Pier 118-107 last night at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City.

Allein Maliksi top-scored with 22 points, Shej Roi Sumang added 21 and import Henry Walker flirted with triple-double with 19 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists for Elite.

Murphy Holloway finished with double-double 28 points and 22 rebounds while Stanley Pringle added 27 points for Batang Pier, which played without the ejected Terrence Romeo in the second half.

Elite improved to 5-5 to complete the quarterfinals casts. GlobalPort and Alaska Aces – both with 3-7 – are now out of contention for the playoffs.

Blackwater started strong and was up 17-11 until Batang Pier responded with a run from Romeo to surge ahead 27-23. But triples from Nard John Pinto and Mark Belo gave the lead back to Elite.

In the second frame, Elite continued its run and turned a slim 39-34 lead to 61-52 at the half on conversions by Belo, Maliksi and Sumang. It also had a break early in the third, with Romeo getting ejected for throwing the ball on Walker.

Blackwater built its largest lead 90-69 in the third on a basket by Belo but Batang Pier countered with a run to come to within 103-109. Elite then got hits from Michael DiGregorio and Walker to seal the win.

Late Saturday night, Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings survived a late run by Rain or Shine Elasto Painters to score 89-82 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

After seeing its 16-point lead get chopped down to 80-78, Kings got timely baskets from Justin Brownlee, LA Tenorio and Earl Scottie Thompson to build an 86-78 edge with under a minute left in the match.

Brownlee finished with 28 points – 11 coming in the first quarter – for the defending champion Kings, which regained the solo first place with 8-2. Painters dropped to seventh place with 5-4./PN
