BORACAY – Capitol will operate and manage the jetty port in Barangay Caticlan, Malay, Aklan in the next four years.

Yesterday the provincial government and the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) signed an agreement on the Caticlan jetty port management.

The signing also marked the official turnover of the port from the PPA to the capitol.

Signatories included Gov. Florencio Miraflores, Vice Gov. Reynaldo Quimpo, PPA general manager Jay Daniel Santiago, and Panay/Guimaras port manager Jose Bautista.

Miraflores said the previous deal between Aklan and the PPA expired in 2015, but the provincial government did not renew the contract after the previous port administration set new income-sharing parameters.

Under the old agreement, Aklan gets to keep 90 percent of the port’s income and only 10 percent goes to the PPA.

But the previous port administration made the income sharing 50-50, Miraflores said.

Under the new PPA administration, the old agreement, which favors the province, will be revived. But the provincial government was given the responsibility to put up additional developments.

Miraflores said there will be more expansion projects at the Caticlan port.

“The potential for growth of the port of Caticlan is tremendous,” he said, noting that more ramps for roll-on, roll-off operations will be built soon.

Santiago acknowledged the successful management of the Caticlan jetty port.

“We at the PPA believe there will be continued progress at the Caticlan port under the management of the provincial government,” he stressed. (PNA)
