ROXAS City – The provincial government of Capiz will mark its 116th founding anniversary from April 21 to 23 with a showcase of Capisnon culture and history packaged in various fun-filled activities.

Gov. Antonio A. del Rosario invited everyone to witness and be part of the Capiztahan celebration.

The American government established the civil government of Capiz on April 15, 1901 by virtue of Act No. 115, based on records.

A marker that contains the Act’s text is displayed at the provincial capitol’s entrance.

In 2003, the Sangguniang Panlalawigan passed an ordinance declaring April 15 of every year as the “Foundation Day of the Province of Capiz” to be celebrated with a fitting activity.

The annual celebration was called “Capiztahan,” which the Department of Tourism later recognized as one of Western Visayas’ major tourism-oriented festivals.

According to historical accounts, Capiz and Aklan were merged as one province with Capiz town (now Roxas City) as provincial capital because the town was near the sea and had better docking facilities.

On April 25, 1956, President Ramon Magsaysay signed Republic Act 1414, which separated Capiz and Aklan into two provinces.

The law specified that the municipalities of Altavas, Balete, Batan, Banga, Buruanga, Ibajay, Kalibo, Lezo, Libacao, Madalag, Malay, Makato, Malinao, Nabas, New Washington, Numancia, and Tangalan belonged to Aklan. (PIA/PN)
