CEBU City – Unidentified gunmen fatally shot the legal counsel of self-confessed drug lord Rolando “Kerwin” Espinosa Jr. shortly after attending a court hearing yesterday.

Lawyer Jonah John Ungab, also the vice mayor of Ronda town in Cebu province, sustained a gunshot wound on the head near his left ear and was rushed to the Chong Hua Hospital in Mandaue City.

According to Senior Police Officer 1 Winston Ybañez, attending physician Jaime Ramos pronounced Ungab dead at 2 p.m.

Ungab was driving his Suzuki Kizashi car along Sergio Osmeña Street in the North Reclamation Area around 11:50 a.m. when two suspects approached the driver’s side and shot him, Ybañez said.

“He was already unconscious when we arrived at the scene,” Ybañez added.

Ungab had a lady passenger inside the vehicle who was unharmed after the shooting incident, Ybañez said.

Ungab had just come from a court promulgation relating to the case against Espinosa when he was shot.

Investigators recovered two empty shells of a .45-caliber pistol from the crime scene. They have yet to identify the suspects and the motive in the shooting.

Ungab earlier told ABS-CBN News that he was able to secure a certification from the Firearms Explosives Security Service Agency and Guards Supervisory Section (FESSAGS) in Central Visayas that Espinosa had a license for his firearms.

“The police did not inform the court [that Espinosa] has a license[d] firearm. We were able to secure a certification from FESSAGS during that time,” Ungab told ABS-CBN News an hour before the shooting.

The Regional Trial Court Branch 23 in Cebu City has just acquitted Espinosa of illegal possession of firearms, but convicted him of the gun ban violation under the Omnibus Election Code.

The case stemmed from a buy-bust operation in Barangay Duljo-Fatima, Cebu City in 2010. (With reports from ABS-CBN News and PNA/PN)
