MANILA – Its mastery of the opponent allowed Ceres Negros to repeat a victory against Davao Aguilas 3-1 in the Philippines Football League at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.

Fernando Rodriguez, Bienvenido Marañon and Jeffrey Christiaens fired a goal each for Ceres, which moved back to fourth place with 28 points on nine wins, one draw and three losses after the Saturday match.

Both teams struggled with possessions early in the match until Ceres drew first blood with Fernando tapping in a cross by Christiaens with a few minutes left in the opening half.

Ceres widened the lead further in the second half, with Marañon draining from a nice pass by Jose Elmer Porteria and Christiaens connecting from a cross by Rodriguez.

Davao Aguilas, boosted by Phil and James Younghusband, did not go home empty-handed – Adam Sawyer snatched a goal in the 90th minute.

The win is a huge boost to Ceres’ campaign as it sets up for a grueling schedule in the next two weeks, said Assistant Coach Ian Treyes.

“We have to make some adjustments in the upcoming games,” Treyes said. “In the next two weeks, we will have four games. We hope to use our other field players and focus on gaining some points.”

With the defeat, Davao Aguilas remained in seventh place with six points on six draws and nine losses./PN
