MANILA – Ceres-Negros leaned on Iain Ramsay’s hat-trick to score a stunning 7-0 win over league leader Meralco Manila in the 2017 Philippines Football League at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Aside from Ramsay, Spanish Fernando Rodriguez also contributed two goals while Stephan Schrock added another one for Ceres.
Rodriguez started things going for Ceres on Saturday with his volley shot from a pass by Jeffrey Christiaens in the 17th minute. He quickly doubled the score with a wide hit from a cross by Ramsay.
Ramsay then began his onslaught as he scored his first goal just before the halftime break, then followed it up with two consecutive shots early in the second half for a 5-0 lead.
The Negros Occidental-based team — which also scored a 7-0 past Ilocos United last week — then put on the finishing touches with a Schrock conversion in the 50th minute before Meralco Manila’s Alvin Sarmiento committed a goal violation.
“Everything just came together for us,” said Ramsay, who became the third Ceres player to score a hat-trick after Rodriguez and Bienvenido Marañon.
With the victory, Ceres jumped to third place in the standings with 19 points on six wins, one draw and two losses, while Meralco Manila suffered its first defeat but remains on top with 23 points.
Over at the CCSC Football Field in Cebu City, Global-Cebu was forced to a scoreless draw by the upset-conscious San Miguel-Davao Aguilas. Global remains in second place with 21 points./PN
