ILOILO City – How safe are the food that vendors sell in schools? The City Health Office (CHO) wants to know.

CHO will be deploying sanitary inspectors to check the food of these vendors that mostly position themselves outside school gates.

“We will focus on the vendors outside schools because as far as school canteens are concerned, they have sanitary permits and their personnel have health cards from the CHO,” said Dr. Bernard Caspe, city health officer.

He wanted the food vendors to secure health cards, too, and should use hairpin or hairnets and face masks.

Caspe said the vendors will also be encouraged to sell clean, nutritious food instead of junk foods.

“Junk foods are detrimental to our health. They cause kidney problems and diabetes among other diseases,” he explained.

The Department of Health (DOH) recently urged local government units to monitor food stalls and ensure their compliance to sanitary practices because improperly prepared or stored food could lead to health problems such as poisoning.

Health secretary Paulyn Ubial said unsuspecting consumers could get diarrhea, salmonella, cholera and amoebiasis from unsafe food and beverages.

“What is most important for food handlers is proper hand washing before the handling the food and after using the toilet. They are also advised to use masks,” said Ubial.

Food contamination can occur in any stage of food preparation – during production, processing, distribution, preparation or storage of food./PN
