MANILA – Cignal HD Spikers got back on the winning track in the Chooks To Go – Philippine Superliga Grand Prix with a 25-19, 22-25, 25-15, 25-17 win over Sta. Lucia Lady Realtors at the San Juan Arena.

Honey Royce Tubino led the way with 15 points.

American Alexis Matthews added 14 markers while Rachel Anne Daquis and Beth Carey contributed 13 and 11 points, respectively, for the HD Spikers.

The Thursday night victory was a morale booster for the undermanned HD Spikers, which played without Guimaras-native Jovelyn Gonzaga.

Gonzaga won’t be seeing action for a minimum of two weeks due to a knee injury.

The HD Spikers took advantage of the Lady Realtors’ errors in the first set for a quick 16-10 lead on their way to bagging the set. They, however, struggled in the second set, allowing the Lady Realtors to snatch it for a 1-1 set score.

In the third set, the HD Spikers had a slow start but managed to pull away midway on hits by Carey and Matthews for a huge 20-8 lead.

In the fourth set, the two imports again made their presence felt as the HD Spikers easily close out the victory.

“I am glad at nag-step up ‘yung iba naming players since injured si Jov,” said HD Spikers head coach George Pascua. “Nandyan naman ‘yung mga skills ng players namin so motivation na lang ang ginawa ko.”

In the first game, Iriga City Lady Oragons snapped its four-game losing skid with a 25-19, 25-21, 25-20 domination over the still win-less Victoria Sports-University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses.

Croatian import Tamara Kmezic showed the way with 20 points for the 2-4 Oragons, which scored its first victory since star hitter Gretchel Soltones was slapped with a one-year ban./PN
