MANILA – Environment secretary Roy Cimatu said he ordered the closure of 300 business establishments in the island resort of Boracay for violating environmental laws.

A notice of violation and closure will be issued to establishments that violated the Clean Water Act and those not connected to sewer facilities, Cimatu told GMA News Online on Tuesday.

The Environment department head said the erring establishments will be given two months to comply with the laws.

On Friday last week President Rodrigo Duterte threatened to shut down the island resort that he described as a “cesspool.”

“I will close Boracay. Boracay is a cesspool. There will be a time that no more foreigner will go there because he will have – when he goes back to the plane to where he belongs, he will be full of s—t going back and forth to the restroom,” said Duterte.

The President also ordered Cimatu to fix the problems of Boracay in six months.

Cimatu said he is up to the challenge.

Kakayanin ko talaga,” he said. “Kagaya rin ng estudyante kung binigyan sila ng oras na magawa, ‘Finished or unfinished, pass your paper.’ Parang ganoon lang naman sakin ang gagawin. I have to do my best to complete it in six months.”/PN
