BACOLOD City – Councilor Caesar Distrito urged the public to be responsible in disseminating information on social media, especially on Facebook.

On Nov. 20, GMA News reported on a false announcement of suspension of classes online.

“The DepEd (Department of Education) has not made any announcement regarding the suspension of classes on Nov. 23, 24, and 27 being circulated by Facebook page ‘Walang Pasok Advisory,’ nor is it associated with the page in any way,” the report stated.

The post, which has since been deleted, was shared for more than 80,000 times.

Distrito said he supports DepEd in its campaign to stop the spread of fake news because “the social media is really being widely used by everybody.”

In this capital city, some individuals have been posting on Facebook that “Bacolod is not safe for investors.”

The posts circulated after three unidentified men shot an Israeli man who owns a restobar along C.L. Montelibano Avenue in Barangay Villamonte last week.

“We are not saying that Bacolod is a hundred-percent crime-free, but wherever you go, there are crimes,” Distrito said.

He added that the incident was an isolated case and thus it does not mean that the entire city is unsafe.

“A crime incident in one area doesn’t mean that crime also exists within the entire thousand-square kilometers of the city,” said Distrito.

Distrito also advised the public to be vigilant. He said business establishments must have CCTV (closed circuit television) cameras or a security guard./PN
