ILOILO City – The Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) plans to pass an ordinance regulating the parking of vehicles at Iloilo River Esplanade in Mandurriao district.

Liga nga mga Barangay president and ex-officio councilor Reyland Hervias said some drivers parked their vehicles for more than two hours, thus depriving others who would like to utilize the parking space to visit the Esplanade.

In the proposed regulation, vehicle drivers can park at the Esplanade for free for the first two hours during daytime. However, for the succeeding hours, they will be fined with P100.

For nighttime, parking space at Esplanade is free from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. only. Overnight parking will not be allowed.

“This proposed regulation on the parking of vehicles is based on the premise that the two hours free parking is already sufficient and can give enough time for the visitors with vehicles to walk around, take photos and do activities in the Esplanade,” Hervias explained.

Hervias is set to pass an ordinance declaring the Esplanade as regulating parking zone and providing penalties during the SP session next week.

The Iloilo Esplanade was opened on Aug. 19, 2012. It was part of efforts to rehabilitate the Iloilo River. Its first 1.2-kilometer stretch is from Sen. Benigno Aquino Jr. Avenue to Carpenter’s Bridge in Mandurriao district.

The Iloilo Esplanade is now a recreational space for walking, jogging, open-air dining and venue for river water sports.

A 750-meter esplanade on the opposite of this first one was also built, and a third esplanade is also being planned from Sen. Benigno Aquino Jr. Avenue to Barangay Nabitasan in La Paz district.

The 15-km Iloilo River is the city’s main tributary, passing through 35 of its 180 barangays. It serves as a source of livelihood for fisherfolk and a habitat and nursery for many fish species.

The body of water declined over the years. Illegal structures were built along the banks, resulting to water pollution. There were also illegal reclamations. (Iloilo City PIO/PN)
