ILOILO City – The Central Philippine University Golden Lions and University of San Agustin are set to square off in the college category finals of the 2017 Iloilo City Invitational Basketball League (Mayor’s Cup-1st Conference) set to start on Monday.

The Golden Lions and USA earned their slot to the best-of-three finale, which will start on Monday evening, after finishing tied at first place with a 3-1 win-loss slate. St. Paul University ended the tournament in third place.

The Golden Lions and USA have split their two previous encounters in the elimination round with San Agustin winning first, 98-94, on May 14 before the Golden Lions exacted its revenge on May 21 to the tune of 78-74.

Meanwhile, still being played as of presstime at the Barangay Katilingban Gym is the high school category semifinals between Sta. Clarita International School and Sun Yat Sen High School; and CenterPhil Montessori against St. Roberts International Academy.

The best-of-three championship match in the high school category will begin on Tuesday afternoon with Game 2 on Wednesday and, if necessary, Game 3 on Thursday.

The 2017 Iloilo City Invitational Basketball Tournament, also known as the Mayors Cup-1st Conference, is organized by the Iloilo City Government and presented by Flanax and Bonamine.

The tournament was initiated by Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog as part of the Iloilo City Sports Program to engage the public, especially the youth, in sports instead of vices.

For the collegiate category, the champion will receive P10,000 while second and third placers will get P8,000 and P5,000, respectively. For the college and 40 and up division, first prize is P5,000, while second and third prize are P3,000 and P2,000, respectively./PN
