BORACAY – The number of crimes in this world-famous island rose 6 percent for the first eight months of the year, records from the Boracay Tourist Assistance Center (BTAC) showed.

From January to August, BTAC reported 1,427 index and non-index crimes compared to 1,342 incidents in the same period last year.

The increase was attributed to incidents of theft and physical injuries committed during the months of March, April and May.

These crimes were rampant in barangays Manoc-Manoc and Balabag, especially during night time.

On the other hand, BTAC recorded a 63-percent decline of crimes in August, with 69 cases this year compared to 186 last year.

In the same month, index crimes such as murder, homicide, physical injury, theft, rape, robbery slid down 49 percent, from 71 cases last year to 36 cases this year.

Non-index crimes such as alarm and scandal, unjust vexation, light threats, estafa, and malicious mischief also decreased 71 percent in the same month, from 115 last year to 33 this year.

For the first two quarters this year, BTAC solved 503 cases from 408 in the same period last year. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
