KALIBO, Aklan – Police recorded 16 crime incidents in this capital town amid the Ati-Atihan Festival.

They included physical injury, theft, vehicle theft, malicious mischief, alarm and scandal, estafa, and threats, police records from Jan. 9 to 12 showed.

Four theft cases happened at the Pastrana Park and on streets in festival zones.

Two cases of physical injury were reported on Mabini Street interior and Oyo Torong Street, while alarm and scandal (three cases) occurred outside festival zones.

There were two cases of malicious mischief, two cases of threat and one case of motorcycle theft, police said.

Security will be more stringent and more items will be prohibited today and tomorrow, the Aklan Police Provincial Office (APPO) stressed.

Merrymakers and spectators are discouraged from bringing sling bags, backpacks, knives, and firearms; selling and using bladed weapons; and carrying glass bottles, said Senior Police Officer I Nida Gregas, APPO information officer.

Mounting sound systems is also banned at festival zones.

“Para sa kaligtasan natin ang ganitong mga proactive measures,” said Senior Superintendent Christopher Tambungan, deputy regional police director for operations. “Nag-inspection (din) tayo ng mga backpacks ng mga revelers.”

Earlier the police advised the public not to bring backpacks to avoid the inconvenience of inspections. Backpacks, which troublemakers may use to keep dangerous weapons, are being strictly checked.

Meanwhile the local government campaigns against smoking during Ati-Atihan by putting up tarpaulins with social media hashtags #SmokeFreeKalibo and #SmokeFreePH./PN
