MANILA – The Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) has been urged to be “proactive” in helping the families of the victims of extrajudicial killings (EJK).
“Kasi napapansin ko po, mukhang malabnaw palagi ang mga nagiging reaction nila,” said Sen. Leila de Lima on Tuesday during her press conference at the Senate.
“… [A]ng paghahari ng batas at hustisya ang tanyag na katangian ng propesyon na inyong kinakatawan. Sa harap ng pinakamalaking kaso ng pagyurak sa batas at paglapastangan sa katarungan, kailan ba natin haharapin ang hamong ito bilang mga manananggol ng katuwiran at katotohanan?”
De Lima, the former Justice secretary, also encouraged the IBP to help the Free Legal Assistance Group (FLAG) deal with EJK cases.
“We are fortunate enough na may grupo katulad ng FLAG na umaasikaso ng mga usapin na ‘yan, sa mga kaso na ‘yan ng EJKs. But I’m appealing to the professional organizations, to the lawyers, to the IBP, lend a hand in terms of exacting justice and accountability,” she added.
On Monday, FLAG lawyers, in a press conference at the Senate, presented retired SPO3 Arthur Lascañas, who accused President Rodrigo Duterte of ordering the Davao Death Squad (DDS) to kill crime suspects.
Lascañas claimed that then Davao City mayor Duterte also paid the vigilante group DDS to conduct the killings./PN
