Host Iloilo welcomes Negros Occidental back

ILOILO City – Iloilo governor Arthur Defensor Sr. is already thinking about the Palarong Pambansa.

Defensor expressed confidence in the athletic force that Western Visayas will bring to the national stage now that Negros Occidental is back in the region.

Negros Occidental returns to this year’s Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) Meet after breaking off from Region 6 in 2015 to become part of the Negros Island Region – which, on the order of President Rodrigo Duterte, was abolished last year.

Defensor, who led yesterday’s opening ceremonies for the 2018 WVRAA Meet, welcomed Negros Occidental back.

“Nasubo-an gid ko sang una nga nagbulag ang Negros Occidental,” he said before the around 5,000 delegates gathered at the Iloilo Sports Complex in Barangay Magsaysay, La Paz district. “Today is a very historic day kay nagbalik na sa aton ang aton palangga nga mga kautoran sa Negros Occidental.”

Defensor believes Western Visayas will have a strong participation in the Palarong Pambansa this year now that Negros Occidental is back in its fold.

“Western Visayas went strong, shall remain strong but, with Negros Occidental, Western Visayas will perform higher, strong and faster [sic],” he said.

The 2018 WVRAA Meet delegates paraded from the Iloilo provincial capitol before gathering at the Iloilo Sports Complex.

Revsee Escobedo, assistant secretary for procurement service and project management service of the Department of Education, graced the opening ceremonies as keynote speaker.

“I wish you all the best not only in your chosen discipline but also in every aspect of life,” said Escobedo./PN
