MANILA – Pulling away from a slow start, University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons scored 84-71 against University of the East Red Warriors in the UAAP Season 80 men’s basketball yesterday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

Paul Desiderio led the way with career-high 28 points, including five 3-point conversions, to help Maroons move up to second place with 2-1. Ibrahim Ouattara chipped in double-double 14 points and 18 rebounds while Jun Manzo had 10.

UP trailed 13-27 in the first quarter but made its move in the second behind Quattara and Javi Gomez De Liano for a 35-34 lead. But hits by Clark Derige and Philip Manalang made UE take the 42-38 halftime edge.

Red Warriors was up 46-40 early in the third when Maroons went on a huge run on consecutive triples by Desiderio for 58-48. The lead expanded 64-49 at the end of the quarter on another trey by Desiderio.

UE tried to make a run early in the final quarter but UP regained its shooting touch. A triple by Desiderio and hits by Kyles Lao and Jerson Prado gave Maroons its largest lead 75-53.

“We have to let go of whatever was bothering us. We are happy to get through this game,” said UP head coach Dolreich Perasol. “This is a very important win. We will be facing tough opponents in our next matches.”

Derige led Red Warriors with 21 points, including four treys, while rookie Mark Maloles added 16. UE remained winless./PN
