ILOILO City – The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) is beefing up its force. It is scouting for professionals who have the desire to become front-liners in the war against illegal drugs.

Interested applicants, male or female, from the Visayas may take a qualifying examination on Feb. 24 in Cebu City, said PDEA Region 6 director Wardley Getalla.

An applicant must be:

* between 21 to 35 years old

* at least five feet tall for female and five feet and two inches tall for male

* a holder of a Baccalaureate Degree

* career service professional eligible, board exam passer or qualified by the Civil Service Commission under special laws

Getalla said those who did not beat the deadline for submission of applications on Feb. 16 will still be allowed to take the examination granting they carry with them their application folders.

“They will be considered walk-in applicants,” said Getalla.

PDEA in Western Visayas needs between 150 to 200 new personnel to be assigned at its regional office in Iloilo City and the provinces of Iloilo, Antique, Aklan, Capiz, Guimaras, and Negros Occidental.

A “big challenge” was how Getalla described their being the lead law enforcement body tasked to conduct anti-illegal drug operations.

For one, they do not have enough personnel, according to the director in a previous interview.

But he tried to be upbeat.

“Despite our limited number of personnel marami pa tayong magagawa para mabigyan ng magandang laban ang droga,” he said.

PDEA Region 6 had long been grappling with logistical challenges. In May 2016, then regional director Paul Ledesma said they only had 27 personnel running after drug traffickers in the region’s 3,389 barangays.

Aside from law enforcement activities, PDEA “also has to perform administrative things, including attending court hearings,” he added.

A PDEA Drug Enforcement Officer (DEO) has an entry level position of Intelligence Officer 1 and a permanent item with Salary Grade 11.

Aside from the qualifying examination, there will also be neuropsychiatric test, medical and dental examination and physical fitness test.

Applicants will also undergo background investigation and panel interview.

Once recruited, one will undergo a six-month comprehensive and regimented Drug Enforcement Officer Basic Course training at the PDEA Academy, Camp General Mariano N. Castañeda, Silang, Cavite./PN
