ILOILO City – The Department of Health (DOH) urged the public to always observe proper food handling, even though there is a decline in the number of food poisoning cases in Western Visayas since last year.
Dr. Elvie Villalobos, DOH infectious disease cluster head, said the region had 790 victims out of 44 food poisoning cases in 2016. Four of the victims died, he added.
This year, the DOH recorded 25 food poisoning cases with a total of 297 victims. They were from Negros Occidental with 80, Iloilo with 117, Iloilo City with 37, Aklan, 38, and Antique, 25. One of them died, Villalobos further said.
“We continue to advocate food safety. Probably the public is already aware, thus the decrease in cases,” he added.
Villalobos reiterated the proper ways of serving food.
He said one must observe proper hand washing before preparing food. The food containers must be kept clean and closed, too.
The food must also be cooked thoroughly up to 70 degrees Centigrade, Villalobos said.
The cooked food must then be kept at safe temperatures.
Cooked and uncooked food must be separated from each other, he added.
Villalobos also stressed that the water used in cooking and drinking must also be safe.
“Food poisoning is caused by microorganisms. The most common is the bacteria come from waste materials,” Villalobos explained. (PNA/PN)
