MANILA – Ariana Dormitorio showed her dominance as overall champion in the opening leg of the Asia Mountain Bike Series at Eastridge in Binangonan, Rizal province.

The Ilongga finished the 17.2-kilometer Women Elite Cross Country race way ahead of her competitors in one hour, five minutes and six seconds.

Finishing with a silver medal was Ya Yu Tsai of Chinese Taipei, who was five minutes behind Dormitorio, while Nor Effandy of Kuala Lumpur bagged the bronze for being seven minutes behind the winner.

National lady rider Lea Denise Belgira of Guimaras province failed to duplicate the feat of Dormitorio after settling for a runner-up finish to Chikako Yoshikawa of Japan in the Women Elite.

In other results, John Derrick Farr outstaged defending overall Men Elite Downhill overall champion Eleazar JR Barba in the 1-kilometer course by just 0.6 of a second.

Former Southeast Asian Games champion now national mentor Eusebio Quinones won Master-B while Road Tour champion Mark Galedo settled for a third-place finish in Master-A.

The Asia MTB Series, designed to help Asian riders earn valuable UCI points for the World Championships and the Olympics, will have nine more legs this year, including one more in the Philippines.

The opening leg on Sunday also served as a gauge of the riders before the Asian Continental MTB Championships in May in Danao, Cebu./PN
