BORACAY – The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) will help the local government unit of Malay in cleaning the excessive algae that grew on the white-sand shores of this island resort.

It had been coordinating with the municipality since last month, according to the department’s provincial head Jairus Lachica.

Several tourists have complained about the excessive algal bloom on the island beaches.

Lachica said one of their experts, Dr. Melinda Palencia, an environmentalist and professor from Adamson University, already presented a program to the Sangguniang Bayan.

“Dr. Palencia invented the vigormin, a white powdery substance which she also calls the ecofriendly septic system (ECO-SEP), a technology for domestic wastewater treatment,” said Lachica.

The ECO-SEP is a movable and deployable septic tank system for the settling, aerobic digestion and filtration of sewage/septic water.

Lachica said the ECO-SEP was first introduced in Boracay in 2015. After its successful introduction, it became widely used in different tourist destinations in the country such as Palawan and Bohol.

“I am not sure if the local government has again used the ECO-SEP technology in Boracay. I will have to ask Dr. Palencia yet on this,” he said.

The DOST-Aklan also sought help from Malay in the establishment of a satellite office in Boracay for better function and mobility. (PNA)
