MANILA – Too soon for a repeat hosting.

The Philippines turned down the offer to host the 2017 edition of the Miss Universe pageant, according to the Department of Tourism.

It will be “too soon” for the Philippines to again play host to the pageant whose 2016 edition was held in the country just this January, Tourism secretary Wanda Teo told the press at the International Conference on Sustainable Tourism for Development.

“No Miss Universe this year. Baka (Maybe) next year,” Teo said on Thursday. “It’s too soon to do it here. It will not be pushed.”

In May Teo said the Philippines was again offered to host Miss Universe this November.

Impressed by how the country handled the pageant, the Miss Universe Organization was ready to award the Philippines the hosting rights again, Teo said.

Iris Mittenaere of France was crowned Miss Universe 2016 — succeeding Pia Wurtzbach of the Philippines — during the pageant on Jan. 30 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City./PN
